Mayor’s Corner by Greg “Porp” Rogers
A couple of weeks ago I was approached by the Rotary to give an updated state of the village. Here is a small portion of what I had to offer. Using a SWOT chart, here is where we are:
Strength- is our credit rating, fund balances, high interest on savings and low interest on loans, financially speaking we are in a very stable place and in good shape for the future.
Weakness- is age. Our board is old, the youngest member is 58, and not many young people show an interest in doing this. Our DPW and WWT plant has 4 out of 8 union employees over 60, one department head is 67.
Opportunity- we must look to develop residential single-family homes.
Threats- inflation, and where it’s coming from. Utilities and insurances, these are not things we can decide on to buy it or not, they are necessary or mandated and going up at an alarming rate.
In last week’s article I mentioned the controversial Monroe County water deal in LeRoy. It was really brought here through the hard work of Mayor Jim DeLooze with the help of Trustee David Tabone. In the end I believe this move has served the village very well. While writing that article, my thoughts were, “Anyone who serves on a board at a local level does it for the love of the community and willingness to try to make that place a better place to live. We might disagree, but they are not trying to do a bad job.” If you might be able to help, we are always looking for someone to help. I urge young people to consider running for one of these positions because we will soon need new members.
